History of Milwaukee
Milwaukee’s history commences with Native Indian Americans namely Menominee, Fox, Mascouten, Sauk and Potawatomi. When American settlers came to this area, they build dueling settlements at 3 places. Major inflow of German and Polish immigrants followed during the early 20th century. The name Milwaukee was derived from a Potawatomi word meaning “council grounds”. First immigrants to Milwaukee were French and Canadians. In 1837, Milwaukee and other settlements turned into villages following mandate from Wisconsin Territorial Legislature to incorporate. A city charter was adopted in the year 1846 and its first mayor was Solomon Juneau. The city underwent migrational influx in 1960s and 1970s, causing massive socioeconomic divide between inner parts of the city and its outskirts. Milwaukee is home to Miller Brewing and Harley Davidson apart from being home to court of the largest breweries in the world. Nicknamed “Brew City” as a result of this, the city is also called the “City of Festivals” for its amazing Summerfest which marks the largest musical festival in the world.
